5 days

In this 5 day workshop, participants will create 4 alla prima portraits, using a different palette each day. On the first day, Sam demonstrates the value of monochrome painting, focusing on brushwork, tonal values, and brushstrokes. On the second day, participants work with the Zorn palette, introducing color through this traditional, highly reduced selection. On the third day, they work with a fully chromatic palette, delving deeper into color theory, color mixing, color harmony, and the interplay of light, color, and form. The fourth and 5th day will be dedicated to elaborating on a final more elaborate portrait, using the palette of the participant’s choosing.

This course is suitable for all experience levels. Each day builds upon the skills learned the previous day. . Some experience in drawing and painting is recommended.

Through live demonstrations, discussions and individual feedback, Sam helps participants to paint three portraits while further developing their own artistic voice.

We will be working from a life model.

Sam Clayden is a professional portrait artist based in Wimbledon, London. He spends much of his time working on portrait commissions, paintings for exhibition and teaching. He is a frequent exhibitor in London, most regularly with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He won the Michael Harding Oil Painting Prize for a portrait at this year’s Green & Stone Summer Exhibition. Inspired by artists from every era, Sam is mostly drawn to the works of the Renaissance and Baroque, the late 19th Century academics and their Impressionist counterparts as well as many contemporary artists. Sam’s belief is that nature, light, atmosphere and simple shape and colour design can be harnessed to communicate something that words cannot and that anyone with the will can learn to paint.
